Padua Junior Nathan Carlson Announces Upcoming Children’s Book Publication

Padua Franciscan High School junior Nathan Carlson recently announced the upcoming publication of his first-ever children’s book, The Story of a Smile, marking another milestone in a growing list of his initiatives centered on service, leadership, and global awareness.

Carlson is currently serving his second term as Padua’s Class of 2027 President. Last year, he gained wider recognition for founding the Kutoa Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting street children and orphans around the world.

In a recent announcement on LinkedIn, Carlson shared that The Story of a Smile has been a long-term passion project shaped by his advocacy for education and his experiences through the Kutoa Foundation. From local classrooms in Cleveland to communities in Tanzania, Carlson says he has seen firsthand the power of literature to foster empathy, curiosity, and understanding in young people.

“In an age where global-mindedness is more important than ever, I believe stories can help young people see beyond their own world,” Carlson wrote. “They can appreciate different lived experiences and imagine a future shaped by compassion rather than division.”

Written with young readers in mind, The Story of a Smile aims to help children view life through a more empathetic lens, encouraging them to recognize the humanity and beauty in every story—not just their own. Carlson emphasized that the book aligns closely with the mission of the Kutoa Foundation, using storytelling as a way to build connection and awareness across cultures.

While the official release date has not yet been announced, Carlson has shared a preview of one of the book’s illustrations and says more details will be released soon. As both a student leader and nonprofit founder, Carlson continues to find ways to turn ideas into action—whether through service, leadership, or now, children’s literature—demonstrating the impact young voices can have when paired with purpose and compassion.
